Ningbo in Overseas Memories | Ningbo Through the Words of German Geographer Richthofen

Over 150 years ago, the renowned German geographer and explorer Ferdinand von Richthofen visited Ningbo twice in 1868 and 1871.

Richthofen left a footprint in many places across Ningbo, including its city areas, Dongqian Lake, Yinjiang Bridge, and Xuedou Mountain.

Richthofen described Ningbo to be “the most affluent and tranquil Chinese city I had seen, aside from Guangzhou” in his book Ferdinand von Richthofen Tagebücher aus China (“Ferdinand von Richthofen’s Diaries from China”).
